Honoring Intentions

thanksgivingPresident George Washington declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1789 with these words:

“Thanksgiving is a time to rediscover the spiritual being within and draw strength from our founders and political zealots whose prolific faith has created a nation that we as well as our progeny will be proud of.”

Let’s reflect Washington’s intentions for this holiday.

“Rediscover the spiritual being within” – Thanksgiving is a time of reflection.  It is a time to be thankful for family, freedom, health, and life. The spirit of this holiday is blatantly betrayed by the painful abuse and slaughter of 46 million living beings. The “spiritual being within” can not possibly be at peace with this brutal treatment of our fellow creatures. Nourish your spirit with life, not death. Show your thanks by giving back, not by taking.

“Draw strength from our founders” – Our founders were a group of men who desired to establish a land of free thinkers.  They believed in “the freedom of the soul to choose between what is right and what is wrong.”  At Thanksgiving, we are encouraged “draw strength from” these beliefs. Consider whether you think slaughtering 46 million turkeys is free-thinking. Consider if your soul has chosen what is right.

“A nation that we as well as our progeny will be proud of” – Are we proud of mistreating 46 million animals for this one single day? Are we proud of cramming them in filthy sheds, pumping them full hormones and antibiotics, genetically manipulating them to grow so obese that their legs can’t even hold the weight of their deformed bodies? Are we proud of hanging them upside down and slitting their throats, of dunking them, some still fully conscious, into scalding hot water tanks, of creating a pile of wounded, bleeding, suffering animals and leaving them to slowly die in pain?  Is this something we want our children to be proud of?
