Quote of the Day Friday #17

Vegetarians always ask about getting enough protein. But I don’t know any nutrition expert who can plan a diet of natural foods resulting in a protein deficiency, so long as you’re not deficient in calories. You need only five or six percent of total calories in protein… and it is practially impossible to get below nine percent in ordinary diets.

    Nic –
Sure, athletes and bodybuilders may want to get more protein to help meet their fitness goals. And this can be done solely via plant protein. There are lots of vegan and vegetarian athletes – here is a list of some: http://www.powered-by-produce.com/dont-just-take-my-word-for-it/

But the point of this quote is really addressing a different point: the possibility of protein deficiency in ANYONE’S diet. Many people assume that vegetarians a vegans can become protein deficient, but this is virtually impossible (as the quote indicates).

Whether you’re an athlete or a couch potato, you do not need to worry about getting enough protein. If you’re an athlete, yes, you may want to consider adding additional protein to your diet depending on your goals.

Thanks for the detailed and very interesting answer.

I understand better the point of the quote about not being protein deficiency.

However, does every protein is the same protein and has the same value? I mean, the protein of meat provide you with the same nutrients/vitamins/protein in comparison to fish protein or plant protein? Won’t you have some deficiencies if you only eat one kind protein?

    Cheers

    Nic,
It is a common misunderstanding that plant protein is inferior to animal protein. While it’s true that most plants contain lesser amounts of certain amino acids, by eating a variety of plants you end up getting all of the amino acids in adequate amounts.

I actually discussed protein in some detail in this post: http://www.powered-by-produce.com/2011/07/22/an-interview-with-yours-truly/ – check out questions 3 and 5.

    Hello,

I wasn’t implying that plant protein was inferior to animal protein, I was asking if it was different. I was implying that eating only plant protein or only animal protein would not be the best for our body. But with your answer now everything is clear.

Thank you very much for taking the time for writing complete and interesting answers :)

(you can edit/delete the following: I like very much your articles and the way you explain things, it would be my pleasure to invite you to write an article on my blog (maybe about protein diet?), you would of course be able to link to your site/blog/post so it can help you to rank better on google. if you are interested, please contact me at info@weightloss-meal-plans.com Thank you again for your answers)
